'1000 Masterpieces from the Great Museums of the World is one of the most successful TV series about art. The original, with improved image quality, takes us on a fascinating journey through the history of art. Comprehensively illustrated and compellingly presented – the well-known authors of five short art surveys provide a deeper insight into the masterpieces of painting. The MoMA in New York is the first choice for aficionados of modern and contemporary art. Art collectors Abby Rockefeller, Lillie Bliss and Mary Sullivan laid the foundations for the museum, which opened its doors under the directorship of Alfred Barr on 7th November 1929. The MoMA presents here an astonishing range of modern art, including key works such as Umberto Boccioni - Farewells [1911], Joan Miro - Dutch Interior I [1928], Jasper Johns - Flag [1954-55], Richard Lindner - The Meeting [1953] and Andrew Wyeth - Christina´s World [1948].' '1000 Masterpieces from the Great Museums of the World' is one of the most successful TV series about art. The original, with improved image quality, takes us on a fascinating journey through the history of art. Comprehensively illustrated and compellingly presented – the well-known authors of five short art surveys provide a deeper insight into the masterpieces of painting. Throughout all the different epochs artists have been inspired by their personal environment. It is no wonder therefore that the city or metropolis has often played a key role in art. Estes, Delaunay, Stella, Caillebotte and Dahl also worked up their urban impressions in painting – with surprisingly different results. Featured works include Richard Estes - Ansonia [1977], Robert Delaunay - Eiffel Tower Champs de Mars [1911], Johann Christian Dahl - View of Dresden under a Full Moon [1839], Joseph Stella - The Brooklyn Bridge [1939] and Gustave Caillebotte - Paris Street Scene in the rain [1877]'. Per its title, the documentary series 1000 GREAT MASTERPIECES FROM THE WORLD OF ART leads viewers on a systematic journey through art history, with each installment focusing on a specific school or collection. The programs draw on insights by the authors of short art surveys, who provide incisive commentaries that are then illustrated onscreen with specific works. This particular volume travels to the end of the Belle epoque, when a rise in global industrialization prompted artists to rebel against classicism in a diverse series of ways. Among these rebels were the Symbolists, who set out to create visual depictions of such elusive areas as subjective emotional states and the dream world. Meanwhile, the Jugendstil emerged, offering a linear, planar style which meshed with that of the Symbolists even as it stood on its own. Artworks glimpsed here include 'Salome' by Franz von Stuck, 'Madonna with Lilies' by Alfons Mucha and 'Spring Awakening' by Arnold Bocklin. (Reiner E. Moritz directs. Total running time approx. 50')

In 1874, a group of artists nicknamed the Impressionists scandalized Paris with its first exhibition. The spirit of these young en plein air painters, who declared that the essence of their art was about capturing the impression of the moment in the colourful play of light, was too revolutionary. Cassatt, Caillebotte, Liebermann, Krøyer and Edelfelt represented a worldwide revolt that ushered in modernism by breaking with conventional ways of seeing the world. Albert Edelfelt: Luxembourg Gardens [1887], Peter Severin Kroyer: Summer evening at Skagen [1892], Gustave Caillebotte: Paris street scene in the rain [1877], Max Liebermann: Women mending nets [1887- 1889], Mary Cassat - The bath [1891 - 1892]' are among the featured works. 'This documentary program finds filmmaker Jan Schmidt-Garre accompanying acclaimed photographer Andreas Gursky, as Gursky creates his work 'Hamm, Bergwerk Ost'. The film observes virtually every aspect of the creative process, from Gursky's first viewings of the motive to taking the photographs themselves and digitally processing the final image. Schmidt-Garre also follows the photograph to its final resting place, in the collection of Ukrainian art connoisseur Viktor Pinchuk. Along the way, experts turn up for commentary including Hilla Becher, Werner Spies and Gursky himself. Also includes Gursky in conversation with Schmidt-Garre. (English subtitles. 'Ballet Hispanico, a 'strong ambassador of not just Latino culture but of dance itself' [Broadway World], brings its bold and eclectic brand of contemporary dance to the screen with two audience favourites: CARMEN.maquia, an electrifying modern take on Bizet’s passionate opera choreographed by Spaniard Gustavo Ramírez Sansano, and Cuban-born Pedro Ruiz’s Club Havana, a virtuostic re-imagining of a sizzling nightclub filled with the exhilarating rhythms and colors of Havana’s golden era. Celebrating over 45 years of bringing individuals and communities together to celebrate and explore Latino cultures, Ballet Hispanico is the new expression of American contemporary dance'. Rebirth of a Nation

'Rebirth of a Nation, by DJ Spooky [Paul D. Miller], has been called a remix of D.W. Griffith's notorious and explicitly [if not avowedly] racist 1915 film The Birth of a Nation, applying the techniques of the electronic DJ to film instead of music. But it was also a musical score, and one of an unprecedented kind. You get both viewpoints on the work here: the album release includes two discs, one containing a complete version of DJ Spooky's remixed film, with the soundtrack recut and resynchronized to the film. Those who have seen Rebirth of a Nation in one of its many live realizations may wish to have this release for the sake of completeness. But really the music itself is another good reason. The cover rubric 'Performed by Kronos Quartet' doesn't quite represent what you hear; instead, the string quartet weaves in and out of DJ Spooky's electronic soundscapes, which both reflect and comment on the film's violent story'.

'Dominic Dromgoole's production brings refreshing clarity to one of Shakespeare's most famous and best-loved tragedies, drawing out the contemporary relevance of this passionate teenage love story. Ellie Kendrick, a truly youthful Juliet, and Adetomiwa Edun, a boyish Romeo, head an excellent cast whose period costumes point to the timelessness of parental disapproval, adolescent temperament, rivalry and violence. Filmed before a live audience at Shakespeare's Globe in the heart of London, it's intimate and atmospheric setting adds immediacy and vitality to the humor and passion of Shakespeare's verse. Filmed in High Definition and true surround sound'. Other cast members include Michael O'Hagan, Philip Cumbus, Tom Stuart, Holly Atkins and Andrew Vincent.
