''1000 Masterpieces from the Great Museums of the World' is one of the most successful TV series about art. The original, with improved image quality, takes us on a fascinating journey through the history of art. 'Titian’s genius and significance in European art are undisputed. Trained at the Giovanni Bellini workshop and influenced by working together with Giorgione, he came to a masterly use of colour, light and shade. His oeuvre contains everything his times demanded: drama, carnal lust, religious fervour, mythology and portraits. Didier Baussy-Oulianoff takes us to the places where the renaissance artist devised his works and worked for the most influential courts. Contemporaries of Titian’s, such as Vasari and Aretino, also get a look in and we see that, in addition to being a gifted portrait-painter, Titian was also a skilled businessman'. '1000 Masterpieces from the Great Museums of the World' is one of the most successful TV series about art. The original, with improved image quality, takes us on a fascinating journey through the history of art. Comprehensively illustrated and compellingly presented – the well-known authors of five short art surveys provide a deeper insight into the masterpieces of painting. Throughout all the different epochs artists have been inspired by their personal environment. It is no wonder therefore that the city or metropolis has often played a key role in art. Estes, Delaunay, Stella, Caillebotte and Dahl also worked up their urban impressions in painting – with surprisingly different results. Featured works include Richard Estes - Ansonia [1977], Robert Delaunay - Eiffel Tower Champs de Mars [1911], Johann Christian Dahl - View of Dresden under a Full Moon [1839], Joseph Stella - The Brooklyn Bridge [1939] and Gustave Caillebotte - Paris Street Scene in the rain [1877]'. Per its title, the documentary series 1000 GREAT MASTERPIECES FROM THE WORLD OF ART leads viewers on a systematic journey through art history, with each installment focusing on a specific school or collection. The programs draw on insights by the authors of short art surveys, who provide incisive commentaries that are then illustrated onscreen with specific works. This particular volume travels to the end of the Belle epoque, when a rise in global industrialization prompted artists to rebel against classicism in a diverse series of ways. Among these rebels were the Symbolists, who set out to create visual depictions of such elusive areas as subjective emotional states and the dream world. Meanwhile, the Jugendstil emerged, offering a linear, planar style which meshed with that of the Symbolists even as it stood on its own. Artworks glimpsed here include 'Salome' by Franz von Stuck, 'Madonna with Lilies' by Alfons Mucha and 'Spring Awakening' by Arnold Bocklin. (Reiner E. Moritz directs. Total running time approx. 50')
