'Silk Baroque presents a musical encounter between Wu Wei and Holland Baroque, performing a program that ranges from Baroque greats such as Bach [Andante sostenuto from the Sonata for Solo Violin No. 2, BWV 1003], Vivaldi [Trio Sonata, Op. 1 No. 12 for Two Violins and Continuo in d, RV 63 'La Follia'], Telemann [Sinfonia from 'Sey Tausenmahl Wilkommen' Cantata] and Rameau ['Tristes apprêts' from Castor et Pollux] to Chinese traditional tunes, all tied together by the musicians’ openness to improvisation and cultural exchange, The disc also includes arrangements by Judith Steenbrink [b.1977] of works by Telemann and Rameau, along with original compositions. Wu Wei plays the sheng, an ancient Chinese mouth organ, which looks like a bundle of bamboo reeds cased in a metal bowl. It is a miracle of harmony, melody and rhythmic possibilities, and Wu Wei’s abilities fully bring out the sheng’s beauty: whispering, charming, and compelling. Age-old traditions come together in performances that sound fresh and contemporary. Holland Baroque is an original and innovative baroque orchestra that approaches baroque repertoire through a fresh and contemporary approach, with a focus on improvisation and collaborations with artists from different traditions'. 'Haunting, gentle spirits from far-flung worlds meet in the pulsing sphere of dreams and lullabies that is Angel Heart, a music storybook. With an original tale by best-selling children's fantasy writer Cornelia Funke, Angel Heart weaves an evocative original score by Luna Pearl Woolf with beloved songs by Irving Berlin, Lennon-McCartney, Jake Heggie, Engelbert Humperdinck, Gordon Getty, and others. An affecting narration by Academy Award-winning actor Jeremy Irons layers upon intoxicating performances by singers Frederica von Stade, Daniel Taylor, Lisa Delan, and Zheng Cao - all above a rich bed of cellos, Matt Haimovitz and his ensemble Uccello. Exquisite images by the award-winning creative studio Mirada unfold the tale, and the boxed CD-and-story package includes a colouring poster, stickers and cards for sharing the magic. Originally released in 2013, and accompanied by premiere performances in Los Angeles and at Carnegie Hall in New York, this is the first international release of Angel Heart'. (Total time: 67'02'. Dvorak, Zigeunermelodien, Op. 55 + other lieder by Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Franz, Wolf and Strauss. (Hilde Konetzni, soprano and Josef Krips, piano. 'The recording conditions could hardly have been more dramatic, made in the bleak mid-war winter of 1942-3, lirico-spinto soprano Hilde Konetzni in a Romantic song programme with Josef Krips as her accompanist and mentor. Konetzni is best known as the Sieglinde in two complete recordings of the Valkyrie under Wilhelm Furtwängler; Krips had been banned from working by the Nazis, so his coaching activities had to be carried out underground, under a constant threat to his life. These private recordings were made by Hermann May, the then sound engineer of the Vienna State Opera, and can now be released on CD thanks to their careful restoration by the Eichinger recording studio in Vienna in collaboration with Gottfried Kraus'.
