Czerny, 'La Ricordanza' Variations, Op.33. Mendelssohn, Songs Without Words, Op.38 #2, Op.53 #3 and Op.67 #2. Brahms, Four Piano Pieces, Op.119. Debussy, Valse Romantique in f. Vladimir Horowitz, 'Les Vagues' Etude-Caprice; Waltz in f; Dance Excentrique in C. Ravel, La Valse. Bach [tr. Shehori], Sicilienne in g [from Flute Sonata #2]. Daquin, Le Coucou. Prokofiev, Prelude, Op.12 #7. Confrey, 'Humorestless' after Dvorak. Mordecai Shehori, piano. 'Live' recordings, 1983, 1993 & 2003. (Total time: 66'05')

'Shehori essays Debussy?s Valse Romantique in F Minor and continues his French exploration with a much different work, Ravel?s immense, cataclysmic La Valse, which he performs with virtuosic panache sufficient to engender rich applause. In between there is the rare opportunity to hear three pieces by Vladimir Horowitz and, like the Mendelssohn, these offer plenty of diverting opportunities for contrast and colour. The Etude-Caprice Les Vagues is a dramatic affair, the Waltz in F Minor rather more harmonically questing, whilst the saucy badinage of Dance Excentrique in C Major'. Musicweb-International

Bach, Largo from the Harpsichord Concerto, BWV 1056 [arranged for piano solo by Mordecai Shehori]. Beethoven, Piano Sonata #22. Chopin, Berceuse, Op.57; Polonaise, Op.40 #1; Scherzo #1. Schubert [arr. Liszt], Gretchen am Spinnrade; Erlkonig; Soirees de Vienne - Valse Caprice #6. Moriz Rosenthal [1862-1946], Carnaval de Vienne [Humoresque after themes of Johann Strauss]. Mordecai Shehori, piano. 'Live' recordings, 1979-87. (Total time: 76'21')

Once again the Shehori recitals prove a seedbed of poetry and digital control. He balances both these facets with accustomed eloquence, allowing the music to speak with naturalness, shorn of interventions, crudities and gaucherie. If you?re lucky enough to see him advertised in concert, don?t miss the chance to hear Shehori, one of the unsung giants of our time. Musicweb-International
