Part I: In Annunciatione Domini [works by Agricola, Finck, Van Turnhout, Verdelot, Anon.]. Part II: In Nativitate Dominum [works by Brumel, Finck, De La Rue, Anon.]. Part III: In Circumcisione Domini [works by Finck, Ghiselin-Verbonet, Adriaensen, Regis, Anon.]. (Ensemble 'Capilla Flamenca'. 'The programme revolves around the small manuscript Ms. II 270 in the Royal Library in Brussels. This unique 15th-century manuscript contains simple polyphonic settings of well-known Christmas songs in a mixture of the vernacular with Latin. Several decades later a similar repertoire would appear in printed songbooks as the ideal indoor entertainment for the more prosperous citizens of Flanders. These intimate Christmas songs were ingeniously interwoven with the most familiar traditional Roman Catholic chant melodies for Advent in a number of large and complex Christmas motets. Antoine Brumel, Johannes Regis and Herman Finck all composed polyphonic masterpieces of this type. Instrumental arrangements of this Christmas repertoire of around 1500 are being performed in this programme as well: sounds from centuries ago that we still recognise today at home, in church or in the streets and squares during the hustle and bustle of traditional Christmas markets'.
