Titles: Primer Ritmo de Comparsa; Day by Day; Trembling; Calaloo; Doctor Bombodee; Carnival Day; Yuca and Plantin; My Teacher Never Like Me; Mother's Love; Back to My Country; G.O.O.D.; Monilia; Calaloo. 'Like Panama, Costa Rica has a substantial minority of English-speaking inhabitants. These pieces -- mostly calypsos, after a terrific percussion comparsa -- were recorded in the Costa Rican port city of Puerto Limon. They have a spread from wonderful to tentative, but this is street-music pure, presenting a range of singers and styles mostly old and unaffected by commercial recordings. Very unspecific notes, disgracefully short measure even for an LP, let alone CD, but very rare music that is never less than charming.
