Featuring music by Faure [from 'Pelleas et Melisande' and 'Shylock'], Stravinsky [from 'Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra'] and Tchaikovsky [from 'Symphony No. 3'] 'Georges Balanchine's ballet 'Jewels', premiered in 1967, is considered the first abstract ballet in musical history. For each of the three acts, titled 'Emeralds', Rubies', and 'Diamonds', Balanchine uses compositions and choreographic styles that stand in stark contrast to each other. Although Balanchine's choreography could not be performed in Russia until more than thirty years after its New York premiere with the New York City Ballet, this milestone in 20th-century ballet history is now one of the showpieces in the repertoire of the Mariinsky Ballet'. (Performed by Ulyana Lopatkina, Igor Zelensky, Irina Golub, Andrian Fadeyev and Zhanna Ayupova with the Mariinsky Ballet and Orchestra/ Tugan Sokhiev. Filmed by Brian Large. Includes an interview with Valery Gergiev, the artistic and general director of the Mariinsky Theater. Total running time approx. 92'. PLEASE NOTE: BLU-RAY DISC PLAYER REQUIRED)
